2007 Pro Kickboat Open at Clear Lake

Tim Zandbergen sets new record with 43.50 pounds at the
2007 Pro Kickboat Open at Clear Lake

Clearlake Oaks Ca; May 19 & 20 2007
The 2007 Clear Lake Pro Kickboat Open will go down in history as a record setter despite the wind. The bite was wide open this weekend and 65 anglers brought 97 limits and over 1600 pounds of bass to the scale over the course of two days. The field was split in half with one half launching at the Island Drive public launch and the other half launching from the host location at M&M campground each day.

The wind was not going to be kind to us this weekend, as it started off breezy but quickly grew and blew most people off the lake and into the Keys fairly early. At the day one weigh in it was Tim Zandbergen who had the bag to beat. Tim weighed in a fat 8.48 pounder for the days big fish which anchored a 27.87 pound limit for the day. Dave Sternitzke brought a solid bag of fish to the scale for 23.69 pounds and the second spot. Jeremy Brumbelow would weigh in the second big fish of the day at 8.02 pounds to top off a 23.13 pound limit and the third position. Chris Youlden wound up in the fourth position for the day with 22.18 pounds while Steve Couts and Mark Goodrich finished off the top six with 20+ pound limits each.

Day two started out a little windier than day one and grew into a near gale by mid morning. This pushed all but the bravest souls, including the bass boats, into the Keys for the better part of the day. In the end it would be Tim Zandbergen who would take the win on the strength of his day 1 bag. Tim managed 15.63 pounds for day two which gave him 43.50 pounds for the tourney. Dave Sternitzke brought 19.18 pounds in on Sunday for a two day total of 42.87 pounds and a second place finish. The third place finisher was Jeremy Brumbelow who scraped up 17.41 pounds on Sunday to total up at 40.04 pounds. Scott Rouhier would make the big jump on day two with the big bag of the day at 19.96 pounds which vaulted him into fourth place for the weekend with 37.69 pounds. Fifth place was Steve Couts. Steve brought five fish for 16.42 pounds to the scale on Sunday for a total of 37.23 pounds. The rest of the paying positions went to: 6th - Chris Zaldain, 36.28; 7th - Chris Youlden, 35.98; 8th - Jon Bird, 35.17; 9th - Binh Phi, 34.98; 10th - Rob Linden, 34.36; 11th - Taylor Capilla, 33.87 and the day two 2nd big fish at 6.20; 12th - Mark Zandbergen 33.47;13th - Dan Balaba, 33.27. The day two big fish was a nice 6.70 pounder brought to the scale by Bryan Vogt.

Tim's two day weight of 43.50 pounds set a new record weight for the Clear Lake Pro Kickboat Open and beat the old record set in 2003 by a whopping 12.2 pounds. Congratulations Tim!

Fish were reported being caught on almost anything that was thrown at them on Saturday and they seemed to get a little pickier on Sunday but there were plenty to go around. Good thing too, since everywhere you looked in the Keys on Sunday there was a kickboat or bass boat getting out of the wind, and most everyone was catching fish.
Clear Lake is an amazing place!

Bass-n-Tubes would like to thank everyone who came out and fished with us at the 2007 "Pro Kickboat Open" at Clear Lake and I would especially like to thank the volunteers who helped make the weigh-in go so smoothly both days. Thank you to Angelique for her work recording weights, Mario for his camera work, Steve for running bags and working the raffle and the rest of the BnT staff who help make this a great event.
I would also like to thank all of the sponsors who donated products and or services for the raffle, it's companies and individuals like you that help make this event better every year.
